2018 VW Atlas
According to ancient Greek myth, after the defeat of the Titans in their war against the Olympians, Zeus condemned Atlas to hold up the sky for eternity. Thus, he became Atlas Telamon, or “enduring Atlas.”
Drivers in Irving, Grand Prairie, Grapevine, and Dallas will find it easy to see why Volkswagen turned to Greek myth as the namesake for the 2018 VW Atlas. If you’re considering this capable and enduring midsize SUV, read our 2018 Volkswagen Atlas review.

2018 Atlas: Interior Dimensions
The 2018 Atlas is the first VW 3-row SUV, as well as the largest vehicle under the brand. Its size shows up in the spacious seating you’ll find in the rear, accommodating kids and adults alike. Legroom comes to 37.6 inches in the (three seat) second row and 33.7 inches in the (two-seat) third row, allowing plenty of space to relax and stretch out.
The Atlas’ flexible cargo bay is a sight to behold. It may not be able to hold up the skies like the Atlas of Greek myth, but it can hold plenty of your things—and in various configurations, with standard 60/40 and 50/50 split-folding second- and third-row seats. Here’s the cargo volume breakdown:
- Behind Third Row: 20.6 cubic feet
- Behind Second Row: 55.5 cubic feet
- Behind First Row: 96.8 cubic feet

Engine Performance Specs
Under the hood of the Volkswagen SUV is a standard 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine that can provide 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. If you want more power for quick passing and merging on the highways, the 3.6L V6 engine is available and will lend you 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque for the task.
This 2018 VW comes standard with front-wheel drive, but its available 4MOTION® all-wheel drive system lets you choose between various driving modes, from Dry or Rainy to Snowy or Rough, to match your ride with the road below it.
When properly equipped, the Atlas has the power to tow up to 5,000 pounds. With capabilities like that, you can hitch up a 20-foot boat for some weekend fun or even a fully-loaded 6-by-12-foot trailer on moving day.
Advanced Safety Features
You can feel confident trusting the 2018 Atlas with the safety and security of your family, with its 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the NHTSA and its perfect score on all crash tests performed by the IIHS.
